The Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers (IIChE) is the apex professional body of chemical engineering professionals in India and was established on 18 May, 1947 at Jadavpur University, Kolkata by Dr. Hira Lal Roy with the following chief objectives :  
• To promote the advancement of Chemical Engineering Science.
• To maintain professional standard and conduct among its members.
• To protect the interests of Chemical Engineers. 
The IIChE activities are spread across the country through its 38 Regional Centres and 58 Student Chapters. The Kanpur Regional Centre (KanRC) is one among the oldest regional centres in Northern Zone and the only regional centre in Uttar Pradesh. Many premier institutions involved in teaching and research in the area of chemical engineering such as Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, Harcourt Butler Technological Institute Kanpur, Institute of Technology Banares Hindu University Varanasi, and Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology Allahabad come under the territorial limits of Kanpur Regional Centre. The KanRC is actively involved in promoting and complementing the activities and objectives of the Institute within its territorial limits by organizing meetings, seminars, and conferences; arranging workshops, refresher courses and counseling sessions; and initiating any other activities which are of social, technical and professional relevance to its members.
